Choropleth or heat maps are a useful way to visualize statistics collected by region, be that constituency, council, etc.

Google charts and other services have choropleth mapping widgets for US states, but not for the UK. We liked the Guardian BNP visualisation, but this wasn't reusable and was Flash based, not accessible by many people, devices or machines.

This hack attempted to produce two different widgets, reusable by anyone wanting to create mashups for UK regional based data sets: an abstract bitmap/imagemap widget with jQuery for interaction and a geo version suitable for overlaying onto OpenStreetMaps and Google maps

Unfortunately official shape data for the UK political regions isn't freely available, so we were forced to investigate converting maps from Wikipedia available as SVG into imagemaps. We also investigated positioning SVG onto Google maps for conversion into KML/geoRSS etc by hand.

Our work continues ..
